Do You Remember When?

Do You Remember When?

Do you remember when as a child a dollar would buy four Christmas gifts? Do you remember buying your mom a comb and your dad a package of razor blades, your sister some bobby pins and perhaps your brother a jackknife? Do you remember Sunday School Christmas Concerts when recitations were memorized? Do you remember hanging old woolen stockings for Santa to fill? Do you remember hard rock ribbon candy? Do you remember bubble lights on your Christmas tree with an angel on the top? Do you remember when family members would take turns reading verses from the Christmas Story? If you are like me you will remember most of these things and it means you were probably born in the 1940’s or close thereof!
Christmas holds a lot of memories for each of us. But times change and with changing times we find that traditions may also change. The stockings we hang are much fancier today. Presents are far more expensive. There may be bowls of fruit instead of ribbon candy. Sunday school or Community Christmas Concerts are not as common today as they were when we were growing up. Bubble lights are a thing of the past on most trees! Is the Bible Story still read by the family before opening presents under the tree? Perhaps you may have started some new traditions and have passed them on to your children and dare I say grandchildren! Since moving to Bermuda we have had to drop one tradition and that is taking our daughters out coasting on snow covered hills Christmas Day afternoon!
There is one thing that has not changed and will never change no matter how hard some may try. Christmas is the celebration of our Lord’s entry into his world in human form. Christmas is the re-celebration of our Savior’s birth. Christmas is all about God’s giving to his children. Other religions have man striving to climb up the walls of heaven. Christmas has God coming down from heaven.
Enjoy your Christmas and watch that ribbon candy!
